Civil

Duties & Services

The Civil Unit is part of the Support Services Division and is responsible for processing civil process as prescribed by law. It is the goal of the Civil Unit to serve received process in a reasonable and timely manner while maintaining impartiality between all parties involved or having an interest in a case.

The Civil Unit serves and enforces civil process and notices provided they are:

  • Accompanied by adequate legal instructions as well as required fees and/or deposits
  • Facially valid
  • Issued by a competent authority
  • Within the jurisdiction of Colusa County for service

Registered Process Servers

Registered process servers are also available for the service of your civil process. You may find registered process servers from your area in the phone book or on the internet. In many cases (except levies, etc.) any person over the age of 18 and not a party to the action can also serve your civil process.

Operating Times

Although field deputies may serve previously processed service requests on any day of the week, evenings, and even holidays, the Civil Unit office is not available during non-business hours. Most service requests made after 4:00 pm will not be processed until the next business day. View more about service times.
